ChatGPT Double Billing & iOS/Web Conflict Guide
How users end up paying $40/month for both Web and iOS subscriptions simultaneously, and how to get refunded.
A persistent issue across Apple Community forums and r/ChatGPT is the Simultaneous Web + App Store Double-Billing Trap.
The $40/Month Double Charge Scenario
How It Happens:
- You originally subscribed to ChatGPT Plus via credit card on chatgpt.com.
- Later, you downloaded the iOS app on an iPhone or iPad and tapped "Upgrade" or "Restore Purchases".
- Instead of linking to the existing Stripe plan, Apple created an independent in-app subscription attached to your Apple ID.
- The Result: You are billed $20 by Stripe and $20 by Apple on recurring monthly cycles for the exact same account, without double model capacity.
How to Fix It & Recover Funds
- Step 1: Check Active Billing Providers:
- Web Portal: Go to chatgpt.com/settings/account and verify if a Stripe plan is active.
- iOS: Open Apple ID Subscriptions and check if ChatGPT is active.
- Step 2: Terminate One Source Immediately:
- Keep whichever channel you prefer (Web Stripe or Apple). Cancel the redundant subscription immediately.
- Step 3: Recover the Duplicate Payments:
- For the Apple duplicate: Request a refund via Apple Report a Problem (reportaproblem.apple.com). Select "I did not mean to buy this / Duplicate purchase".
- For the Stripe duplicate: Submit a chat ticket at OpenAI Help (help.openai.com) providing both receipts to prove overlapping periods.
