How to Cancel GitHub Copilot & Request Refunds

Detailed steps to cancel Copilot Individual, revoke organization Business seats, and submit refund tickets to GitHub Support.

Account Deletion ≠ Add-on Cancellation

Deleting an active repository or removing the GitHub Copilot extension from VS Code / JetBrains does not stop recurring charges. You must cancel the subscription within your GitHub account settings.

Step-by-Step Cancellation

Open Copilot Settings

Sign in and go directly to github.com/settings/copilot.

Manage Subscription

Under your plan details, open the Manage subscription dropdown menu.

Cancel Subscription

Select Cancel subscription. Follow the prompts to confirm your cancellation.

Verify Downgrade Date

Your dashboard will reflect that Copilot remains active until your billing cycle ends, after which access will drop to free status without further charges.

Refund Policy & Eligibility

GitHub adheres to the GitHub Terms of Service - Subscriptions and Billing:

  1. General No-Refund Policy: GitHub subscriptions and add-on services are generally non-refundable once billed.
  2. Statutory 14-Day Right of Withdrawal (EU / UK): Users residing in the EU or UK are eligible for a full refund within 14 days of initial purchase or renewal by law.
  3. Accidental Renewals: If you intended to cancel before a trial ended or before an annual renewal processed, GitHub Support often honors discretionary refunds if contacted within 72 hours of the charge with minimal to zero query activity.

Submitting a Refund Ticket to GitHub Support

  1. Visit the GitHub Support Contact Portal (support.github.com/contact).
  2. Choose Account, billing, or abuse > Billing and licensing.
  3. Submit a ticket using the following structured template:
